Business and Life Manners

Using the prefix “San”

08.21.2019

In Japan, it is generally observed that when calling your superiors, their positions or job titles should also be said after their name. As for the other people such as your co-workers, business partners, and customers, the prefix “-San” is added. There is a saying in Japan that goes “shitashiki naka ni mo reigi ari”, in which its English equivalent goes as, “A hedge between keeps the friendship green”. This means that courtesy is important no matter how close your bond is to prevent any troubles from happening. Let’s try to be polite and add “-San” or their job titles to have a harmonious relationship at work.
