Calligraphy or Shodou is one of Japan’s traditional art and is done by writing kanji and kana characters artistically using traditional Japanese writing materials, brush and ink. Even today, the practice of calligraphy is still observed especially during January 2. This practice is called “kakizome” or literally “first writing”, wherein auspicious words are phrases are written.
