“Hashi Watashi” or Exchanging Food With Chopsticks

“Hashi watashi” is passing food from one pair of chopsticks to another. This is the same act that Japanese people do during a funeral for picking up the cremated bones of the deceased. Thus, it is considered as bad luck. Japanese people do not like this behavior so be careful when using your chopsticks.

If you do want to share food with someone, place the food on a plate where you and your friend can easily put and pick up the food back and forth. In addition, this rule applies to chopsticks, but is not a problem when passing food to a spoon or fork. Do not hesitate to share food with others.
