Avoid the Numbers (4,9) when Giving Gifts

In Japan, there is a custom where it is considered lucky to give gifts in odd numbers such as 3,5, and 7. Although the number 8 is an even number, it is still considered lucky because it means prosperity and is commonly practiced during celebrations. For happy celebrations, it is better to avoid the numbers 4, which means “shi” or death, and 9, which means “kuu” or suffering. Thus, the 4th floor in a hospital is generally not displayed and does not have any patient’s rooms. Although there are some packs of candy or other sweets that may contain 4 or 9 pieces, it is still best to avoid these numbers.
