Manners on Holding a Rice Bowl

Japanese people usually hold the rice bowl with the left hand and chopsticks with their right hand when eating a meal. Children in Japan are told to always hold the rice bowl with one hand while eating and avoid inugui or eating in a manner how dogs eat their food. However, there are also specified bowls in Japanese cuisine which should not be held with your hands such as the medium and large platters, and food bowls used for serving grilled fish, sashimi, and fried food. The eating manner for Japanese cuisine is described as “beautiful and does not cause discomfort to other people”. Therefore, we should also observe this and eat in an orderly manner.

Let us try to adapt to these standards and show appreciation to the food served to us.
