Basic Principle of 5S

Hello, everybody. Have you heard of the term, “5S”?

5S(seiri, seiton, seisou, seiketsu, and shitsuke)  is the basic principle applied in every workplace in Japan. As a matter of fact, every company implements this principle in their daily activities.

1.Seiri

Seiri means separating what is needed from what is unnecessary. Putting aside what you need and throwing away what is not needed. Not only does it mean material items, but it also includes unnecessary work. For example, avoiding unnecessary overtime by prioritizing the urgently needed work and postponing other tasks for later is considered a form of seiri

  1. 2. Seiton

After doing seiri, make a plan where to place the remaining necessary items and arrange it appropriately.

3. Seisou

Make a clean environment free of dirt in your workplace.

4. Seiketsu

After seisou, maintain the cleanliness of the company’s surroundings.

  1. 5. Shitsuke

Shitsuke means creating rules at the workplace, and keeping the rules in place while keeping them in the habit.

What do you think, everybody? If you do get a chance to work in Japan, do try the 5S concept in your workplace.
