“Tate Bashi” or Sticking Chopsticks to Stand on Rice
“Tate bashi” is an act of putting the chopsticks straight on top of a bowl of rice. This is taboo in Japan since this is done to serve rice to a deceased person at their bedside.
For Japanese people, it is considered a very rude action.
Japanese children are taught from an early age that tate bashi is not to be done. I, too, was taught as a child by my parents because it is a rude manner in Japan.
