Avoiding Trouble in Japan

Emergency Measures for Flood

01.13.2020

Japan is a country where large-scale disasters such as typhoons, floods, and snowstorms frequently occur. Let us prepare for it in advance to minimize the damage brought on by these disasters.

  •
  • 1. Flood preparation measures
  • Due to heavy rains, nearby rivers can overflow and cause floods to occur. Go shopping a day before the typhoon arrives. Prepare supplies such as potable drinking water, food that doesn’t need to be cooked, medicine, portable flashlight, and dry batteries in case of power outage.

For power outage, prepare a portable flashlight and dry batteries.

  • Confirm the location of the evacuation area and the route in advance.

     *Do not forget to bring

your passport, residence cards, or other personal IDs.

  • 2. Verify the information
  • Gather the weather forecast or news about typhoon or heavy rains from the radio, television, or internet.
  • Check for notifications of warnings or advisories instructed by your local city hall.
  •
  •  3. Prevent flood damage at home
    • Check the surroundings around your house, bring items that can easily be blown by the wind inside the house and secure it firmly.
    •  Paste vinyl tape on door and the space between the windows, then close the rain shutter door. In preparation for the flood, move your household furniture or other items to a higher area. Shut off your main gas valve.
  •
  • 4. How to walk when evacuation is necessary
    • When evacuating, do not walk towards flooded areas. Also, if you are feeling any danger during evacuation, evacuate to the 2nd floor or go to a nearby tall building.
    • When the area is already flooded, there is a danger of falling in a manhole or gutters on the street so it is advisable to the use an umbrella or long stick/pole to check the ground while walking slowly.
    • If the water level of the river is overflowing, it is very dangerous because the river flow is fast that it can wash away and tear down bridges. Thus, absolutely do not go near it.

In case of a flood, absolutely do not go outside if unnecessary. If you really need to go outside, go home early as soon as possible

  •
  • When it is not possible to evacuate or when the 1st floor of your house is already flooded and you are unable to get out, move up to the 2nd floor or to the rooftop. Absolutely do not try going to the evacuation area or going outside because floods have a strong current that can wash you away.
