Umeboshi (Pickled Plum)
Have you heard about the food called umeboshi? Umeboshi is a popular food in Japan which is sour and is red in color. It is made by curing ume (Japanese plum) with salt, drying it, and preserving it together with perilla or shiso leaves and ume or plum vinegar. Umeboshi comes in varieties from soft to large, to small and crunchy, and is usually eaten together with rice called chahan. Be careful not to eat raw and green ume as it might contain “hydrocyanic acid” which is a poisonous component.
