Food Culture (Teishoku or Set Meal)

 

Hello, Everyone. Have you eaten teishoku at a cafeteria or a restaurant before?

 

What is teishoku?

Japanese restaurants often have menus for teishoku. Teishoku is a meal where small portions of food are lined up together and served. Teishoku consists of rice as its center and includes one of each type of food. Currently, a teishoku lunch can be eaten for a price below 1000 Yen. Thus, making it very popular for salarymen and students. 

 

These are some of the basic food components included in teishoku :

  1. Rice: White rice is commonly served.
  2. Miso soup: Seasonal ingredients are commonly included.
  3. Pickled vegetable or tsukemono: Ingredients (vegetables) marinated in vinegar.
  4. Meat or fish: Seasonal meat or fish is commonly served.

 

Triangular Eating or Sankaku tabe

Sankaku tabe is a way of eating by first starting with rice, then alternately eating meat or drinking miso soup. First, try chewing the rice while taking a bite of a small slice of meat to adjust the taste in your mouth. To be able to get a lot of nutrients from teishoku, let us finish all of the food portions served.
