Food Culture (Donburi or Rice Bowl Dish)
Everyone, have you ever eaten a donburi before?
Similar to teishoku, donburi is generally served in restaurants and affordable (costs below 1000 yen). Donburimono (often called donburi) is a Japanese dish where meat and rice is placed inside a big bowl or a donburibachi. Compared to teishoku, it is faster to eat donburi and contains more rice.
Types of Donburi
Since there are a variety of donburi all over Japan, we will introduce the basic kinds. Have you eaten one of these donburi before?
- 1. Katsudon: a deep fried pork cutlet(tonkatsu) is simmered with egg and sliced onion, then put it on rice.
- 2. Gyudon: It is considered the cheapest donburi. It consists of beef strips and sliced onion simmered in egg, then placed as rice topping. Some people eat this dish with benishouga or red pickled ginger and raw egg.
- 3. Kaisendon or Seafood Bowl: Fresh sashimi of different kinds of seafood put on top of rice. Most people add wasabi and soy sauce to this dish for taste.
- 4. Tendon: Deep fried tempura (shrimp, vegetables, etc.) put on rice, then poured with sweet sauce.
How to Eat Donburi
Although it depends on the type of donburi, you basically have to hold the bowl and eat it with chopsticks. When using a spoon, please eat it with a spoon while holding the bowl.
