[Rainy Day] Umbrella Etiquette

In Japan, there is a culture where you tilt your umbrella whenever you pass by other people, so they will not get wet with the rain drops. If you are unaware of this manner, you might cause trouble to other people. To prevent this, let us study some precautions during rainy days and the manner of holding umbrellas.

  • How to open an umbrella

If you open it upwards, water droplets may splash on people around you and yourself. After checking the surroundings, it is safe to open the umbrella in a downward direction.

  • When passing other people

In order not to hit someone or make them wet from the droplets, tilt your umbrella and open it facing the opposite side especially if you are in a narrow road.

  • How to close an umbrella

When closing an umbrella sideways, be careful because the tip of the umbrella can face other people and is dangerous.

  • Walking with an umbrella

When holding the middle handle of the umbrella, it will be dangerous as you can stab other people. When walking with an umbrella, be careful not to disturb the people behind you.

If you use the umbrella incorrectly, it will annoy the people around you, and in the worst case, may cause injury to the others. Let us be careful and be considerate to others.
